The Android Developer Challenge is a Google-sponsored program that will provide $10 million in total awards for the best mobile apps built on the Android platform.
A thriving developer community will be an important part of creating better mobile experiences that delight users around the world. We want to support and recognize developers who build great applications for devices based on Android.
There will be two parts to the Android Developer Challenge. Android Developer Challenge I will accept submissions from January 2 to April 14, 2008. The Android Developer Challenge II will launch after the first handsets built on the platform become available in the second half of 2008.
We welcome all types of applications but are looking to reward innovative, useful apps that make use of Android's capabilities to deliver a better mobile experience. Here are some suggested areas of focus to get you started:
The $10 million in awards will be given out as cash awards -- no strings attached. The total will be distributed equally between the Android Developer Challenge I and II. In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. These 50 entries will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten awards worth $275,000 each and and another ten worth $100,000 each.
We will announce the structure for Challenge II at a later date.
Judging of submissions will be by panels of Open Handset Alliance members and/or mobile experts. More information on the judging criteria will be available in the Terms and Conditions when they are made available, which will be on or before the date the submission page is made available to developers.
